I’ve a question, is there a maxiumum number of items you encounter, when you start seeing performance difficulties?
Answer:
Moving screen with 399 objects (Ubuntu 10.04 Core2Duo 1.73GHz):

• Firefox 4.x – 7 seconds
• Chromium 6.0.x – 3 seconds
• Opera 10.61 – 2 seconds
• Midori 0.2.2 – instantly (almost, only a flick)

Moving screen with 2.068 objects (Ubuntu 10.04 Core2Duo 1.73GHz):

• Firefox 4.x – 39 seconds
• Firefox 4.x – 8 seconds (IN BACKGROUND)
• Chromium 6.0.x – 10 seconds
• Opera 10.61 – 6 seconds
• Midori 0.2.2 – instantly (a bit slower than previous but still a flick)

Moving screen with 8.083 objects (Ubuntu 10.04 Core2Duo 1.73GHz):

• Firefox 4.x – 156 seconds
• Firefox 4.x – 37 seconds (IN BACKGROUND)
• Chromium 6.0.x – 60 seconds
• Opera 10.61 – 24 seconds
• Midori 0.2.2 – 2 seconds

Note 1: If Firefox is in background is much faster, the problem is when you see when is updating the screen.
Note 2: The size of objects only slow down Chromium (when moving screen, not when generating the heatmap).
